Q: How does the DACH region differ to the rest of W Europe? What are the unique challenges?
A: Germany and the DACH region, as well as the UK, are probably the two most significant and substantial Life Sciences markets within Europe being home to many of the large pharma companies, research institutes and universities which dominate the sector.
Furthermore the DACH region, especially Southern Germany and German speaking Switzerland, has a particularly high number of pharma companies and pharma related industry in an already affluent part of the world so demand for people is high and so, therefore, are the salaries.
The North of Germany is a little less expensive but it also means people must travel further to access the most lucrative and prestigious customers.
Q: If salaries are already high and you can’t just throw money at the issue, how do you secure the best talent?
A: In markets such as this, where the fight for top candidates is extremely competitive and the percentage of such candidates on the market low, search and selection techniques employed by an experienced recruiter not only help you identify highly qualified candidates but allow you to engage with candidates at an early stage in the recruitment process and find out what really motivates them as well as gives you the chance, via the recruiter, to peak a genuine interest in the opportunity on offer by being able to tell your story that is not predicated on salary alone.

Q: Are employment costs high to a hiring company?
A: Relatively speaking, yes. Germany along with other DACH, Benelux and Scandinavian countries has a high tax culture and employers certainly pay their share in this tax burden but costs are not as high as France, which is the most expensive place to hire someone from an employer’s point of view in W Europe. Germany does however have the advantage of giving you access to premium markets and customers and makes hiring in Germany/DACH essential for most companies looking to sell in Europe. If companies are going to hire just one salesperson in Europe as a starting point they tend to pick either Germany or the UK.
